Abstract
1467779 Electromagnetic couplings HEENAN DRIVES Ltd 1 May 1975 [28 June 1974] 18158/75 Heading H2A In an electromagnetic coupling wherein a generally cylindrical inductor drum 27 is mounted on a drive shaft 19 and is electro - magnetically coupled to a rotor member 29 on a driven shaft 21 by virtue of flux generated by a coil 47, the drum 27 has a uniform reluctance in the axial direction and has one or more circumferential grooves 57 in an outer heatdissipating surface 55, fluid directing members 61 being disposed on the drum adjacent or contiguous to the surface 55 whereby to direct cooling fluid, e.g. air, into the grooves when the drum rotates. The members 61 are generally cylindrical in shape in the coupling shown, but they could have oval or other (not detailed) cross-sections. The grooves 57 could form a single continuous helical groove. A housing 13, 15, 17 may have apertures (not shown) to allow air to be directed towards the coupling. In the arrangement seen, the rotor member 29 comprises a ring of interdigitated poles 39, 41.
