Abstract

1465273 Rotary exhaust valves T W ANDREW 14 May 1974 [16 May 1973] 23215/73 Heading F1B A reciprocating piston engine comprises at least one piston operating in a cylinder and has at least one valve-controlled induction port above a top dead centre position of the top face of the piston and has a sole valve-controlled exhaust port located in the cylinder wall with a lower boundary just above the bottom dead centre position of the top face of the piston. Exhaust port 12 is a slot which is inclined to a plane normal to the cylinder axis and the cross-sectional shape of which changes gradually to circular. A two-part valve housing 13, 20 is attached to the cylinder wall and contains a part-spherical valve-member 23 which has a flat on one side and is driven at half-engine speed, so that the exhaust port is connected first to a passage 15, then to passages 15 and 16 and finally to passage 16 only. The engine is a four-stroke mixturecompressing or direct-injection type and has an inlet valve 5. Alternatively the engine may be a hot air engine, Figs. 7, 8 and 9 (not shown) and then has two valves in the cylinder head of which one admits cold air and the other, hot air. A small quantity of fuel may be mixed with the hot air. The space 2 in the engine block is for the circulation of cooling air instead of a liquid coolant.
