Abstract

1456123 Printing on moving articles; selective printing E R NORWOOD 26 March 1974 [11 May 1973] 13272/74 Headings B6C and B6F Articles 17 moving on conveyer 16 are printed upon by assembly 10. Abutment 70 contacts the leading edge of article 17 and carries along the printing assembly. Type 61 is inked by roller 97 as the type passes this roller, and the type is then pressed into contact with the article when limit switch 50 is actuated by cam 90 to admit pressurized air to piston and cylinder arrangement 48. When the assembly reaches the end of the frame roller 93 fixed to the frame contacts cam surface 94 to lift roller 70 out of the path of the article, and spring 95 returns the assembly to its initial position, where roller 70 is urged into the path of the articles on the conveyer by spring 76. Alternatively, roller 70 may be retracted by other means, e.g. hydraulic. The type may be fixed, movable bands, an automatic sequencing imprinter, or input heads controlled from external sources. Although shown as printing on the top of the articles, the assembly may be placed to one side of the conveyer to print on the sides of the articles.
