Abstract

1,127,482. Screen-printing apparatus. SCREEN PRINTING MACHINERY Ltd. 26 Jan., 1967 [14 Feb., 1966; 28 Oct., 1966], Nos. 6425/66 and 48348/66. Heading B6C. In a silk screen printing machine, the printing bed 7 is adapted to be raised to a first position in which grippers on bars 4-4<SP>111</SP> and sheets supported thereby lie flush with the bed, and to be lowered into a second position in which the sheets may be drawn over the bed by a mechanism including endless chains 2. The chains 2 are moved intermittently by a rack 16 and pinion 14 acting on a chain wheel 3 and reciprocated by a crank wheel 22 which also acts as a cam wheel to control the movement of the bed 7. A cam-operated locking device (not shown) prevents reverse movement of the chain wheel 3 on the non-driving stroke of the rack 16. A cam follower 24 coacts with the periphery of the cam and crank wheel 22 to operate linkages 48 and 33, 34 which move the bed 7 and an inking mechanism respectively. The inking mechanism, comprising a transversly movable squeegee (19), Fig. 3 (not shown), mounted above a stencil frame (114), Fig. 4 (not shown), is supported on pillars 45, 46 which are movable up and down by the links 33, 34 connected to the cam follower 24. The bed 7 may be moved upwardly as a whole by interconnected links 52, 60 or may pivot about a point near the feed end of the bed. In operation, while one sheet is being printed, a second sheet on a feed table 6 is gripped by a gripper, such as 4, so that when the squeegee has finished its traverse of the first sheet, the chain can move on, registering the second sheet on the bed, the stencil frame and the squeegee being lifted and the bed being lowered. The stencil frame, squeegee and bed then return to their operative positions before the squeegee begins its return traverse. The squeegee slide (18), Figs. 3-5 (not shown), has lugs (118) bearing tapered register pins (120) which cooperate with holes in the gripper bars to register the stencil frame (114). The gripper bars are connected to the indexing chains by trailing links (126, 128) guided by rollers (132, 134) on a track (130), the trailing links allowing the gripper bars to move slightly for accurate registration. The sheet may be held in position by the application of slight suction. The machine may include more than one printing station.
