Abstract

1455455 Processes for casting cylinder blanks; moulds; cores KARL SCHMIDT GmbH 14 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 521915/73 Heading B3F A piston blank is cast in a steel mould 1 containing a sand, or as shown, a composite steel core 5 which may be water-cooled, the mould when filled being cooled firstly at the piston-skirt end, e.g. by water sprayed from a ring 7. Molten Al alloy is introduced either under low-pressure from a melting furnace (with further pressure during solidification as shrinkage occurs) through a pipe 2 and a fitting 3 which may be cooled, or by pouring down the mould side from a spouted ladle (19), in which case a composite steel core closes the mould bottom. Between casting cycles in the latter case, the mould 1 is rotated to even stress and and wear. As shown, the spray ring 7 is secured to the mould 1 while a deflecting skirt 8 (which with the aid of air blown up through a gap 9 removes the water to a box 10) is vertically movable, in a timed relation to control solidifidation, to change the length of the water layer on the mould 1. In the inverted arrangement, in which the mould bottom is closed by the core, there is no deflecting skirt but the spray is vertically movable to control the solidification.
