Abstract

1,208,333. Casting processes and apparatus; moulds; SUMITOMO KINZOKU KOGYO K.K. 13 Feb., 1968 [13 Feb., 1967], No. 7114/68. Heading B3F. Metal ingots 14 are semi-continuously cast by pouring molten metal 1 into an open-ended,. thin-walled, water-cooled mould 5 on to a baseplate 9, axially reciprocating the mould on a table 12 while withdrawing the solidifying ingot on the base-plate down through the mould without directly water-cooling the ingot, stopping the axial reciprocation and the flow of metal and removing the ingot from the mould by lowering it on to a truck 8. Alternatively, the ingot is removed by raising the mould on hydraulic cylinders (not shown). Melt teeming from a tundish 3 (see Fig. 15) is effected through a ceramic crucible 72 which strains out slag impurities from the melt. The mould may also be pulsed laterally to prevent the ingot from bulging, in which case the lateral and axial vibrations are synchronized. Moulds.-In Figs. 11 and 15 the iron, steel or cast iron mould 5 is provided with a rigid upper part (coolant inlet 21 and header 22) and a deformable lower part (facing wall 23 welded to backing 28). The backing 28 and facing wall 23 define coolant passages 24 which are chromate or molybdate treated to reduce corrosion. The mould cavity walls have a chromium or molybdenum coating. Coolant is removed by a pipe 27 and a lateral pulsing device 13 is mounted mid-way along the mould walls.
