912,256. Making pistons; composite casting. SCHMIDT G.m.b.H., KARL. Aug. 23, 1961 [Aug. 23, 1960], No. 30458/61. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] In a method of making a light alloy piston in which the head is of a cast material and the shaft is pressed or forged and in which the head may contain a cooling system, ring elements or other metal elements, the cast and forged parts of the piston are joined by means of a fused junction. A cast billet is forged or pressed and, if necessary, finished by machining to form a blank a having a domed surface to which is applied a metal layer d, e.g. zinc prior to inserting it into a chill mould e. A zinc coated cooling system l is positioned on the blank with its inlet and outlet ends engaging the bores g and the head portion of the piston is then cast on. The metal layer d and part of the metal beneath it flows into the annular recess # during pouring. The cast metal may be of a different composition from the blank a. A sand or water cooled metal core is inserted in the cavity b to effect cooling of the head after casting. A ring element m may also be cast in position.
