Abstract

1455319 Hydrodynamic transmission control FMC CORP 18 Oct 1974 [23 Jan 1974] 45770/74 Heading F2W A fluid coupling for driving a centrifugal pump comprises pump and turbine elements 28, 36, a shroud 30 fast with the pump element and surrounding the turbine element, a central aperture 30b in the shroud which receives liquid from a filling jet 65 and a filling control blade 70 between the jet and aperture to control the amount of liquid which enters the shroud and thus the filling of the coupling. Permanent bleed orifices 34 in the periphery of the shroud 30 discharge into a housing 15. The blade 70 is pivoted at 73 to the housing 15 and is fast with an arm 72. A control plunger 82 subject to the pressure of the centrifugal pump discharge acts on the arm 72 in opposition to a spring 87 adjustably pre-stressed by a knob 85 which sets the desired centrifugal pump delivery pressure. Variation in the discharge pressure of the centrifugal pump varies the position of the arm 72 and blade 70 to vary the filling of the coupling. An input driven pump 51 delivers liquid to the jet 65. The liquid in the housing 15 is cooled by a heat exchanger 94. Blades 42 on the shroud 30 accelerate liquid supplied thereto from the jet 65.
