Abstract
1367391 Reciprocating pumps SHERWOOD MEDICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 20 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 2847/72 Heading F1A [Also in Divisions A5 and H2] A reciprocating pump for use in an infusion system Fig. 1 (not shown) includes a control circuit Figs.3 and 4 (not shown) and see Division H2 by which the pump is shut off when its actual pumping rate differs from its selected pumping rate by more than a predetermined amount. The pump comprises a piston 44 sliding in a disposable syringe 42 coupled to a two-way valve 40 having an inlet 36 and an outlet 46. The piston 44 is reciprocated through gearing 121-140 by a bi-directional D.C. motor 120, which is reversed whenever a projection or a magnet 150 on a carrier 140 connected to the piston actuates forward and reverse limit switches 154, 152. The motor may be driven by re-chargable nicklecadmium batteries 160 or from a transformed external A.C. source. The pump, valve, motor and batteries are removably held in a two-part moulded casing 90, 170 the former part also containing a printed circuit control board 156 for the pump. The control circuit allows any one of various predetermined pumping rates to be selected, the use of differing size syringes allowing the choice of differing ranges of pumping rates. The motor 120 is driven by pulses having a less than 100% duty cycle, the duty cycle being increased by the control circuit at the higher selected pumping rates, though the reverse piston stroke always occurs at maximum speed. During the off-time of the pulses, the motor 120 acts as a tachometer generating a back EMF, the size of which provides a measure of the pump load and which is used to adjust the on time of the pulses to compensate for load variations due e.g. to the use of different syringes or the pumping of different fluids. A battery variation compensation circuit is included in the control circuit, which decreases the off-time of the drive pulses during the forward pump stroke to compensate for the battery supply voltage falling with time. The rate control shut off circuit of the control circuit operates by comparing a derived analog wave form representative of the selected pumping rate with the actual pumping rate as determined from the frequency of actuation of the limit switches 154, 152. The control circuit also includes circuits which shut down the pump if the pump speed control system should fail in a way to cause the pump to operate at full speed, or if bubbles in the pumped fluid are determined by electrodes 212 (e.g. if the fluid source has been emptied), or at excessive pump discharge pressures, as well as an indicator circuit for these latter two conditions and a circuit allowing the pump to be primed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1232655.
