1,140,073. Reciprocating pumps; vacuum pumps. BORG-WARNER CORP. March 10, 1966, No.10621/66. Headings F1A, F1B and F1N. [Also in Division H2] In a reciprocating fuel pump comprising a pumping plunger 32, the output shaft 15 of the drive 14 is connected to the crank-shaft 16 by a resilient coupling 17 and the crank-shaft and a sleeve 23 journalled on the crank-pin are biased in a direction away from the pumping plunger. The sleeve and crank-shaft may be biased by a U-shaped coil spring (38) Fig. 2 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the sleeve and crank-shaft are biased by the action of the piston (73) of a vacuum pump connected by a line 76 to a vacuum reference control of a fuel injection system. The vacuum pump piston (73) is formed with an annular groove (79) which houses a unidirectional sealing ring (80). The plunger 32 carries a rubber cap 35 and is biased against the sleeve 23 by a spring 36. The plunger is held against the bias of the spring 36, when the delivery pressure in pumping chamber 31a rises, to decrease the plunger stroke. Vapour is vented to the fuel tank 56 through a connection 58 to the pump inlet containing a float valve 59.
