Abstract

1445861 Casting silicon WACKER-CHEMITRONIC GES FUR ELEKTRONIKGRUNDSTOFFE mbH 4 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41439/73 Heading B5A A process for the manufacture of silicon mouldings comprises casting a silicon melt into a mould having a moulding surface consisting of one or more substances selected from graphite, sintered quartz wool, sintered quartz sand, and sintered silicon nitride, either in vacuo or under an inert gas atmosphere, the temperature of the mould being such that when the silicon melt contacts the moulding surface a solid layer of silicon immediately forms thereon. In the apparatus shown, a hollow silicon article is produced in a two part mould comprising a convex part 5 of graphite having a surface 7 of silicon nitride and a concave part 6 of graphite having a surface layer of sintered quartz wool or sand. The silicon is melted in a quartz crucible 1 before being poured into the mould via a funnel 3.
