Abstract
1326676 Casting processes INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970 6 July 1970 20 July 1970(4)] 24997/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] In an electroslag remelting process additives are introduced into the melt in the mould so as to cause rotation of the melt. The additives may be blown into the slag and metal portions of the melt in opposite directions so as to cause the slag to rotate in one direction and the molten metal in the other direction. There may be several zones of rotation within a given horizontal plane. In one embodiment, Fig. 8, a continuous casting mould is made up of three sections and the additive is introduced into the melt from slots 24 formed at the junctions between the said sections. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the additive is blown into the slag contained in an upper widened portion 14 of the mould through slots 16, the additive passing through a porous slag layer 38 and molten metal layer 21. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11, the mould 1 is provided with a central portion 32 having a cup 33 which serves to collect the molten metal. From the cup 33 the metal is fed to four smaller moulds (34) located about said central portion and in which the metal is solidified to form four ingots 37. The additives are blown into the melt through nozzles 35. In other embodiments, not shown, the electrode is surrounded by a coil made of the same material as the electrode, and the additives are introduced to the melt through this coil which melts as the process proceeds. More than one such coil may be provided. Additives which may be introduced into the melt include Ar, He, N 2 , CO 2 , Ar+O 2 , and Ar+CaF 2 .
