Abstract

1443275 Luffing-arm apparatus SIMON ENG DUDLEY Ltd 23 Dec 1974 [23 Jan 1974] 03230/74 Heading B8H Access equipment for providing access to the exterior surface of a ship's hull in dry dock comprises a carriage 10 having wheels 11 which engage a track 12 extending along the perimeter of the dry dock, a first boom 16 being mounted on the carriage 10 for pivotal movement about a vertical axis, a turn-table 18 being located at the free end of the boom 16 for rotation about a vertical axis and a second boom 19 is connected to the turn-table 18 for pivotal movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis 20, a working platform or cage 22 being disposed at the outer end of boom 19. Vertical movement of the boom 19 is effected by an hydraulic ram 21 while movement of the boom 16 relative to the carriage 10 and the rotational movement of the turn-table 18 is effected by separate hydraulic motors (not shown). A link 23 which is pivotally connected to the carriage 10 and to a bracket 24 which is itself pivotally connected to the first boom 16 on the axis of rotation of the turn-table 18 ensures that the angle which the boom 19 makes with the side of the dock is maintained constant during movement of the boom 16 relative to the carriage 10. The equipment also comprises means not described for maintaining the platform 22 level during the vertical movement of the boom 19.
