Abstract
785,202. Load-handling machines. ADAMS, D. T. May 11, 1956 [May 19, 1955], No. 14791/56. Class 78 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A platform 45, Fig. 1, on a carriage 11, is adapted to be raised or lowered on the side of a ship or dock by hydraulic means, the carriage being movable along rails 7 when the platform is raised. A beam 13 attached to the carriage supports two cylinders 27, Fig. 2, in which slide pistons 31 carrying a beam 33, and this beam in turn supports two cylinders 35, slidable in the beam 13, in which slide pistons 41 carrying a beam 43, Fig. 1, on which the platform 45 is mounted. The platform is movable about a pivot 47 by the cylinder 51, and is steadied by cables 63, 69 provided with tensioning means (not described). The platform may be moved up or down by the cylinders 27, 35, or away from the ship's side by the cylinders 17 which rock the beam 13 about pivots 15. The carriage 11 may be mounted on a rotating base 83, Fig. 6, so that the device may be used for loading stores direct into the ship's hold through the hatch 87.
