Abstract

1441045 Fatty acid esters HENKEL & CIE GmbH 7 March 1974 [8 March 1973] 10195/74 Heading C2C Low temperature resistant, liquid fatty acid esters are prepared by (a) esterifying adducts of ethylene and/or propylene oxides on (1) train oil fatty acids or liquid fatty acid mixtures containing train oil fatty acids with 10-60% by weight of unsaturated fatty acids C 20 -C 24 with (2) liquid fatty acids or mixtures of fatty acids with not more than 75% by weight mono- or diunsaturated fatty acids C 10 -C 22 free of train oil fatty acids or (b) esterifying adducts of ethylene and/or propylene oxides on (2) with fatty acids (1). The train oil fatty acids, in particular those obtained from herring, menhaden, or sardine oil have a content of 10-60% of higher unsaturated fatty acids C 20 -C 24 and the number of double bonds is on an average 2À1 to 5À3 per fatty acid chain, the remainder being mono- or poly-unsaturated C 14-18 and smaller proportion of saturated C 10 -C 22 . Preferred fatty acid mixtures are oleic, linoleic, gadoleic and/or erucic from natural fats. The esterification is by conventional means and examples describe the esterification of fish and menhaden oil acids with those from olein, rape, peanut and palm oil. The esters or their sulphited or sulphated products may be used as stuffing agents for leather.
