Abstract

1430663 Dimerization of carboxylic acids HENKEL & CIE GmbH 12 Oct 1973 [14 Oct 1972] 47763/73 Heading C2C Mono- and polyunsaturated carboxylic acids (8-22 C) and their esters with aliphatic alcohols (1-4 C) are dimerized by heating in the presence of a macro-porous acid ion-exchanger (with average pore diameter of 250 to 360 Š) with a high specific surface and without gel character. Sulphonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers with a surface of 40 m.<SP>2</SP> per gram may be used in a range 5-20% by weight at between 120‹ and 180‹ C. The products are separated by distillation at reduced pressure. Examples describe the treatment of soya fatty acid methyl ester, and linseed oil fatty acid. Trimers may be present in the product.
