Abstract

1434651 Brazing SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 22 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 29907/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] In brazing a tube 1 to a plate 2, both being of aluminium or aluminium alloy and e.g. forming parts of a heat exchanger, the tube is provided with a bulged portion and the tube is engaged in a hole in the plate with the bulged portion 4 bearing on the rim of the hole in the plate, the tube or the plate being provided with capillary channels adjacent the junction of the tube and plate or a washer having capillary channels being provided adjacent the junction of the tube and plate, and the assembly is heated to cause brazing alloy to flow and be drawn by capillary attraction between the parts. The brazing alloy is preferably an aluminium silicon alloy and may be provided as a plating on the tube and/or plate or as a separate piece. In one embodiment 9 pipe 1 Fig. 1 has an enlargement 4 formed with ribs 5, possibly at an angle to the pipe axis, extending to the end of the pipe and the pipe is inserted in a hole 3 in a plate 2. After fluxing brazing is effected with the ribs causing capillary flow. In a modification the plate has a collar depending from the hole therein and either the pipe or the collar are ribbed and in a further modification the edge of the hole is shaped to form a recess 11 Fig. 5, provided with ribs 5b which extend into the hole at 5a. To maintain the relationship of the pipe and plate the pipe may be crimped at spaced points into the plate collar or small tabs on the pipe are bent into openings provided in the collar. In another embodiment neither the pipe 1 Fig. 7 nor the plate 2 is ribbed but a washer 12 having radial ribs is placed over the end of the pipe to provide capillary spaces. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,204,724 and 1,316,480.
