Abstract

1434534 Brazing UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 23 Aug 1973 [6 June 1972] 26422/72 Heading B3R In making a peripheral joint between a tube 4 and the wall of an aperture in a second member 1, crenellations are formed in the outer surface of the tube by knurling and the rim of the aperture is chamfered, the tube is fitted into the aperture and its knurled region is expanded into contact with the wall of the aperture without completely removing the crenellations, a ring of braze metal is located in the recess and in a vacuum furnace the assembly is heated to effect brazing. In an embodiment a heat exchanger tube plate 1 is provided with a chamfered hole 2, 3 and a tube 4 is provided with its crenellations by running a knurling tool around the tube while the tube is supported on a mandrel. The tube 4 is inserted into the hole so that the crenellations engage the hole and a tube expander lightly expands the tube to substantially close the gaps between the ribs. With a ring of brazing alloy 9, e.g. containing palladium, positioned in the chamfer the assembly is placed in a vacuum furnace; which is flushed with hydrogen, to melt the brazing alloy. A number of tubes may be simultaneously brazed to apertures in a tube plate.
