Abstract

1433539 Mining machines; dust suppression in mines JOY MFG CO 18 Sept 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 43681/73 Heading E1F A mining machine has a boom-enclosed dust collector assembly for use in a coal mining Operation wherein the dusty air from a mining operation is gathered directly from said operation, collected in the mining machine boom, selectively wetted and separated by centrifugal processing into a coal slurry for disposal and clean air for exhaust. In the machine shown dust-containing air is drawn into the boom, by a fan unit housed in the boom, through intakes 12, 13, 20 and a top intake (not shown). Clean air leaves the boom through exhaust duct 16, 18 and the slurry is discharged from the boom through ports 14. The fan unit includes a vane-mounting, centrally disposed unit 28, 30 discharging into a spiral passage 34 of the fan casing where the dust contaminated air is sprayed by water from nozzles 40 as the dust moves outwards of the air to be collected in dust traps 68-74 spaced along the outer wall 56 of the passage through which the clean air passes to one or the other of discharge ports depending on the setting of gate 76. The slurried dust passes by gravity from the traps to the ports 14. A modified fan is also described.
