Abstract

1408099 Dust suppression in mines ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 24 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25009/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for removing dust laden air from the vicinity of a longwall mineral mining machine 1 irrespective of the position of the machine along its path of travel comprises a fixed longitudinally extending suction conduit 5 located adjacent the path of travel of the machine and provided with a plurality of sideby-side normally closed pivotable flaps 8. In use the flaps in the region adjacent the moving machine are opened by a member 9 extending from or activated by the machine whereby dust laden air enters the conduit 5 from whence it is passed into a cyclone dust collector (47, Fig 8); the dust-free air is discharged into the fallen roof area of the mine. All the flaps 8 may be provided with perforations 33 to maintain a small inflow of dust laden air throughout the length of the conduit, in addition to the largeinflow at the point where the machine is mining. The flaps 8 can either be spring biassed (see Fig 2) or gravity biassed into their closed position and they may open either outwardly or inwardly. Large pieces of mined material are prevented from entering the conduit 5 through the flaps, when open, by means of a shield 13 connected to the mining machine. Removal of dust from the floor 28 of the conduit 5 may be achieved by flushing with water from a pipeline 29 provided with multiple perforations or nozzles 31. Suction is applied to the conduit 5 by means of one or more blowers (40, Fig 7). The material mined by the rotating cutting drum of the machine 1 is removed by a face conveyor 2, and a spill-plate 3 prevents mined material from tumbling into the roof support area. Electric power cables 4 are carried by a passage way 4 below conduit 5.
