1430783 Steam irons GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25771/ 73 Heading D1A In a steam iron with a steam generating chamber 24 in the soleplate 10 fed through a drip valve 32 from a water tank 20; a dump valve 56 is provided which may be operated by a control 64 to empty the tank 20 and purge the iron of lint and deposits in the steam passages or by a control knob 28, which preferably controls the drip valve 32, to momentarily open the dump valve 56 to provide an extra surge of steam to the soleplate. A strand 50 directs water from the dump valve -onto the soleplate adjacent a heating element 18. The control 64 actuates the stem 68 of the dump valve through a connector 30, and a member 66 with an arm 86 at its end. The "up-for-steam" control 28 actuates the dump valve through the connector 30, which is pivotal in the control knob 28 and a bore 72 in the stem of the water drip valve 26, engaging a recess 76 at the top of the member 66. As the member 66 is depressed by the knob 28 the connector 30 engages a cam surface 82 of a fixed bracket 80 and is thus moved off the recess 76, (Figs. 3, 4 not shown) when the dump valve 56 is closed again by a return spring 58. The water valve 26 is closed by depressing the control knob 28 further when the connector 30 engages the bottom of the bore 72 in the valve stem and a recess 84 in the control knob 28 engages the handle of the iron. A further control 40 may be provided to actuate a water spray 38 manually.
