Abstract

1464465 Steam irons GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 26 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 18300/74 Heading D1A A steam iron has a means to purge it of water and loose residues by providing an opening 52, Fig. 2 in the water tank 20 and means 54, 56 to control opening to dump the water directly into the boiler 24 and thus empty the tank and produce a large quantity of purging steam. The large opening 52 is spaced from and independent of a usual metering orifice 32, Fig. 1. The water is introduced into the boiler via a guide 62, Fig. 2 which causes the water to swirl and thus scrub out the boiler. The stream is distributed by a ramp 60 extending from the bottom of the boiler to distribution passages at the top of the inner surface of the soleplate. The system may be applied to flooded boiler or non-flash boiler irons with or without manual or power-operated spray.
