Abstract
1423187 Coke deactivation ISC SMELTING Ltd 25 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 45766/73 Heading C5G Metallurgical coke is deactivated with respect to reaction with O 2 or CO 2 by exposing hot lumps of the coke to a suspension of a substantially dry, powdered inorganic compound in a carrier gas whereby a coating of the inorganic compound on the coke is formed. The inorganic compound may melt below 850‹ C. The melting may be by the heat available in the hot coke possibly with supplementary heat such as provided by a flame spray. The inorganic compound may be a boron compound, e.g. boric acid, borax or other borate. The carrier gas may be air or the combustion product of a hydrocarbon with oxygen. The coke may be formed from smaller carbonaceous particles bound together and coked. The application of the coke in the blast furnace smelting of zinc is referred to.
