Abstract

1438999 Production of iron in a blast furnace NIPPON KOKAN K K and W WENZEL 16 Nov 1973 [25 Nov 1972 8 March 1973] 53178/73 Heading C7D In a blast furnace process for producing molten iron in which ore coke and flux are charged in alternate horizontal layers, molten iron and slag being tapped from the hearth, a portion of the withdrawn gas is regenerated with fossil fuel to enrich it with carbon monoxide and hydrogen and is introduced into the hearth with technically pure oxygen and a second portion provides at least part of the heat for the regeneration and preheating of agents, e.g. oil and oxygen, introduced into the hearth. The blast to the hearth is thus substantially free from nitrogen and the carbon monoxide and hydrogen provide a peak combustion temperature of about 2000‹C, and provide sufficient gases for transfer of heat up the stack. A portion of the regenerated gas may also be introduced into the stack, the blast accounting for 55-63% of the total regenerated gas introduced into the furnace. The regenerated gas may be subjected to a cycloreaction to produce two types of gas, one containing carbon particles which is added to the blast and the other, from the central region of the cyclone which is introduced into the stack.
