Abstract

1364614 Producing iron FMC CORP 27 Oct 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 49750/72 Heading C7D A method of producing carbonaceous ironbearing bricquettes comprises (a) Preparing a reactive calcinate by heating coal particles at from 250‹ F to just below temperatures at which substantial amounts of tar-forming vapours are evolved, in the presence of oxygen. (b) Shock-heating to tar producing temperatures to remove the tar-forming vapours. (c) Heating the resultant char to a higher temperature below 1800‹F to reduce volatiles to below 5% while retaining 1% at least of hydrogen in the material. (d) Mixing and bricquetting the calcinate with a bitumous binder and iron bearing particulate material. (e) Curving the bricquettes by heating for 80 to 180 minutes in a gas containing at least 5% oxygen to produce a temperature of 450 to 575‹ F in the interior of the bricquettes. (f) Further heating the bricquettes in the absence of oxygen to a temperature of between 1600 and 1800‹F for 10 to 180 minutes to simultaneously coke the bricquettes and reduce the iron bearing particulate material to at least 90% metallic iron.
