Abstract

1484583 Chromium carbide UNION CARBIDE CORP 14 Aug 1974 [15 Aug 1973] 35735/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A powder containing in total from 0À2 to 5À4 wt. per cent carbon wherein substantially every particle of said powder comprises free chromium and at least one chromium carbide selected from Cr 23 C 6 , Cr 7 C 3 and Cr 3 C 2 . The carbides may be present on the surface of the chromium in each particle or may form a shell completely surrounding the chromium in each particle or may be dispersed within the chromium in each particle. The powder may be produced by admixing a source of chromium (e.g. commercial chromium powder; chromium oxide or any chromium compound that decomposes on heating with carbon or hydrogen to form chromium) with a source of carbon and may be optionally admixed with water and a binder and formed into briquettes, the mixture so produced may be heated to 1000 to 1400‹ C. for 1-50 hours under non-oxidizing conditions (e.g. vacuum, hydrocarbon and/or hydrogen atmosphere). The source of carbon may be decolourized carbon, lampblack, powdered graphite, chromium carbide, gaseous hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon/hydrogen gas mixture in which solid carbon is reacted with the hydrogen to produce a hydrocarbon vapour which reacts with the chromium. Alternatively the mixture of chromium and carbon or chromium and chromium carbide may be melted at above 1500‹ C. and allowed to cool to precipitate out the chromium carbide. In both methods the sinter cube/solidified melt produced may be comminuted to produce the required powder size. The powder may be sprayed using a plasma arc or detonation gun to provide a coating having a multilayer structure of overlapping thin lenticular particles, each particle containing a mixture of chromium and chromium carbide on a metal substrate, e.g. the interior aluminium trackout surface of a rotary combustion engine.
