Abstract

1422087 Rotary internal combustion engines AUDI NSU AUTO UNION AG and WANKEL GmbH 19 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 12083/74 Heading F1F A twin-rotored internal combustion engine of the trochoidal type includes lubricating means for each cavity 5, the lubricating means comprising a lubricant passage 14 which leads into a passage 10 which communicates with the atmosphere and leads into a bore 12 for a tie-rod 4 and thence to a trough 13 in the end and intermediate plates 2, 3 which open into cavity 5 at a point where each chamber undergoes the induction phase, flow through passage 10 being controlled by a rotary throttling valve 19, Fig. 4, connected to the spindle 20 of a throttle valve in the induction line 24. Valve 19 is located between an air inlet 25 leading from the air inlet line of the carburetter and an outlet 26 leading to passage 10. For light running, only aperture 27, Fig. 5, registers with passage 26 and then as engine speed increases and valve 20a opens up, opening 28 co-operates with passage 26 to give a progressively increasing air-flow. Air sucked in through passage 10 to the cavity 5 draws lubricant along the passage walls therewith. The troughs 13 can be shaped to direct the lubricant against the peripheral wall 9 of cavity 5 Fig. 2, (not shown), and an alternative throttling means to valve 19 also described Figs. 6 and 7, (not shown).
