Abstract

1452326 Admission of working fluid: valves BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO Ltd 11 Dec 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 42963/73 Heading F1F [Also in Division F2V] To prevent ingress of exhaust into an induction passage of a Wankel I.C. engine, when running at light load, a butterfly valve is disposed adjacent the inlet port in the engine's peripheral wall and is moveable between a first position in which it does not appreciably restrict gas flow and a second position (as shown) at light loads in which inducted gas flows into a working chamber, through semicircular apertures 19 in the butterfly valve, the apertures being closed by a reed valve plate 21 to prevent flow in the other direction. The butterfly valve may be actuated with a throttle valve of the engine's carburetter via a lost motion linkage so that the butterfly valve remains in the second, closed, position until the throttle valve has opened a pre-set amount and after this point it is moved almost instantaneously to the first open position. Alternatively the port valve may be actuated pneumatically from the first to the second position in response to negative pressure within the induction passages.
