1419765 Locking devices; bolt mechanisms BANHAM'S PATENT LOCKS Ltd 15 March 1973 [17 March 1972] /12671/72 Heading E2A A locking device comprises a bolt 4 carried by a casing 2 and a cylinder lock 6 arranged to displace the bolt between a retracted position and an extended position in which the outer end of the bolt projects from the casing, the lock having its longitudinal axis transverse to the casing, and a rack and pinion or spline mechanism 10, 12 interconnecting the lock and the bolt. The arrangement is such that the casing with the bolt can be inserted in an aperture in an end face of a member, e.g. a door, to be locked by the device and the lock can be inserted in a further aperture in a side face of the member transverse to the end face aperture, the lock being secured in its operative position relative to the casing by retaining means 42 extending along the casing from a position adjacent the outer end of the bolt to engage the lock. As shown, the lock is located by shoulders 18 and a projection 24 on the casing and has a spine 8 provided with a slot that, in assembly, and after the spine has been engaged in an arcuate recess 34 of the casing, is brought, by tilting of the lock, into engagement with a projection 36; the screw 42 is not accessible when the door is locked and the lock therefore is resistant to tampering. The lock can be mounted on either side of the casing.
