Abstract

1415052 Moulding closure caps CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 8 Feb 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6133/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A metal closure is initially manufactured as a one piece blank 10<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2. This is further formed by conventional means into the closure 10, Fig. 3, which has knurled rings 14, .15, tamperproof slots 16, a radiused portion 25 and a transition portion 26. A glob of suitable compound is inserted on to the end panel 11 and formed into a liner 28 by application of a moulding punch 30 which centres and seals on the transition portion 26. The liner is formed so that the projecting portion 34 will receive the surface 37 of the bottle 18. When the closure is applied an upper closing tool 40 engages the radiused portion 25 and by downward movement reforms it to conform with the bottle profile surfaces 37 and 38, Fig. 4. At the same time the liner 28 is deformed so that the portion 32 seals the neck 20 and the portion 34 is wiped around the surface 38 to complete the seal. The remainder of the closure is applied by a rolling tool so as to conform with threads 21 and/or other retaining means 1311. In a modified version the moulding punch (56), Fig. 5 (not shown), is of a different configuration resulting in the liner having a different initial relationship with the bottle neck (20), Fig. 6 (not shown).
