Abstract

1409754 Feeding webs FERD RUESCH MASCHINENFABRIK 29 Sept 1972 [23 May 1972] 44996/72 Heading B8R A rotary printing press having a printing member 2 rotated at a constant speed includes a web feed device 6 located downstream of a printing station and a dancer roll 5 upstream of the station, the feed device and dancer roll being controlled so that a web 30 delivered intermittently to the press at a velocity which varies sinusoidally, is fed intermittently at a constant speed through the station during printing. The web, fed into a loop 33 by rollers 32 is pulled intermittently through a stamping, printing or numbering machine 7 at the varying velocity by a gripper 8. The feed device 6 comprises a constantly rotatable perforated drum either with fixed radial walls (26), (27) Fig. 6 (not shown), defining a chamber in which the vacuum can be altered, or with a movable mask (23), Fig. 4 (not shown), for controlling the vacuum applied to the web, control in either case being via a cam-shaft 10. The printing member 2, dancer roll 5 and gripper 8 are all driven by the shaft 10 such that when the gripper 8 feeds a length of web, the vacuum effect in the feed device 6 is low so that the web is not fed thereby and the slack is taken up by the rising dancer roll 5. The vacuum effect is then increased to advance the web at constant speed through the printing station as printing takes place, the dancer roller descending during this operation. A web clamp may be provided downstream of the gripper 8. Flexo-printing, letterpress and web offset printing may be undertaken.
