Abstract

1407756 Connector THOMAS & BETTS CORP 16 Oct 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 48093/73 Heading H2E An electrical connector capable of making stable connection to a conductor of different expansivity comprises U-bent plate 45 with grooves 26, (cross-section as Fig. 2), running round the U, while pairs of arcuate faced teeth 30 separated by flats 24 define the grooves. Tongue 60 allows extension of the connection to other circuit members. A conductor, insulated or not, is laid along the axis of the U- trough, the sides of which are then crimped, (Fig. 4 not shown), so that teeth 30 penetrate the conductor, through the insulation if any. On further pressure teeth 30 deform across the top of their adjacent grooves 26, while conductor material extrudes into the grooves, (Fig. 6, not shown), making secure contact. Any excessive expansion of the conductor relative to the connector causes webs 28 to stretch and thin elastically and reversibly, maintaining the contact, (Fig. 7, not shown). In alternative embodiments each tooth flank forming a groove side, or all flanks, may be planar, (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). The webs 28 may be additionally thinned by shallow aligned grooves on the outer surface of the connector, which may be covered with insulation, keyed by these grooves, (Fig. 10, not shown).
