1399626 Locks NISSAN MOTOR CO LTD and OHI SEISAKUSHO CO LTD 22 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 39015/72 Heading E2A A door latch mechanism comprises a body, a latch element 14 pivoted on the body and comprising a ratchet portion 26 having unlatching, safety and fully latching teeth 26a, 26b, 26c, a spring 24 urging the latch element to the unlatching position, a detent 30 pivoted on the body and having a pawl portion 36 engageable with the ratchet portion for retaining the latch element in any one of the positions, the detent having spaced extensions 38, 40 a spring 34 urging the pawl portion to engage the ratchet portion, a locking lever 64 pivoted on the body, a connecting member 80 angularly movable with concurrent angular movement of the locking lever, the connecting member 80 having an unlocking abutment 90 and an unlatching abutment 88 which are respectively engageable with the extensions 38, 40, a detent actuating lever 46 pivoted on the body a spring 50 urging the lever 46 to the latching position the connecting member having a pin 86 movable in an elongated slot 62 in the lever 46, the unlatching abutment 88 engaging the extension 40 for releasing the latch element when the lever 46 is turned to the unlatching position with the locking lever 64 inoperative, allowing the latch element to turn under the action of the spring 24, the unlatching abutment 88 being moved out of alignment with the extension 40 when the locking lever is operative, the unlocking abutment 90 being in alignment with the extension 38 when the lever 46 is in the latching position and the locking lever is operative, the unlocking abutment 90 being out of alignment with the abutment 38 when the lever 46 is in unlatching position when the locking lever is operative and a curved edge 18 on the latch element engageable with a striker 10 for turning the latch element to the fully latching position when the latch mechanism is operative. The latch element 14 and detent 30 are pivotally mounted on one cover plate of the body and the locking and detent actuating levers are mounted on the other cover plate, the movement of the extensions 38, 40 being limited by engagement in arcuate slots 42, 44. A spring 74 causes the. locking lever 64 to snap into locking and unlocking positions at predetermined pressures thereon. Keyless locking is affected by closing the door with both the levers 46 and 64 operative so that the extension 38 is out of alignment with the abutment 90 and the door remains locked when the latching lever 46 is released. Inadvertent locking of the door by closing the door with the locking lever operative is prevented by the extension 38 striking the abutment 90 thus pivoting the locking lever which snaps to the inoperative position as the latch element pivots to fully latching position.
