Abstract

1340706 Locks WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd 22 April 1971 [29 April 1970] 20581/70 Heading E2A A latch assembly for a vehicle door comprises a latch member 18, a detent member 25 therefor with a projecting pin 27 and releasing member 36 with an end face 38 which engages the pin 27 to move the detent to the releasing position and a locking member 40 which engages the releasing member 36 and when actuated moves the releasing member to an inoperative position the locking member being rendered inoperative by lateral engagement of the pin 27 with the releasing member 36 when the door is open, keyless locking being effected by actuating the releasing member 36 and then the locking member 40 when the door is still open, actuating the releasing member raises the member to a position where it is unobstructed by the pin 27 and allows movement of the releasing member and permits actuation of the locking member 40. The slotted latch member 18 engageable with a U shaped keeper pivots in a plastics unit 11 and has peripheral recesses 23, 24 for engagement by the. detent member 25 which is spring urged into engagement therewith in the safety and fully latching positions respectively of the latch member which is spring urged to the releasing position. The releasing member 36 and locking member 40 pivot in a second unit 12 the units 11, 12 being secured to opposite sides of a door edge panel. The interior ends of the locking and releasing members are actuated by one arm of pivoted bell crank levers, whereas the end 40b is actuated by a key actuated lock and end 34b by external release means. The face 38 of the releasing member is displaced from the path of the detent pin 27 by actuating the locking member 40, a projection 43 of which engages in a recess of the releasing member to displace it. When the door is open the detent rests upon the periphery of the latch member and the detent pin is raised to the position 27a where it blocks clockwise movement of the releasing member 36 and therefore prevents operation of the locking member. During keyless locking, actuation of the releasing means raises the releasing member so that the pin 27 no longer blocks its rotational movement and actuating the locking member swings the releasing member to the inoperative position so that the door is locked after it is closed and the releasing member released.
