Abstract
1390895 Moulding vessel bases COCKERILL OUGREE - PROVIDENCE & ESPERANCELONGDOZ EN ABREGE COCKERILL 27 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30619/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division F4] A metallurgical vessel (e.g. a ladle used for teeming steel) having a metal shell comprising a lateral wall and a base is provided with bottom lining by tamping raw refractory sand into the bottom of the shell in a series of annuli and into the remaining central space. The process comprises (a) placing on the shell's base a pattern whose peripheral contour is of substantially the same shape as but of smaller size than the peripheral contour of the base, filling the annular space so defined with sand, tamping the sand and removing the pattern, (b) forming a series of similar tamped sand annuli using successively smaller patterns and (c) tamping sand into the remaining central space. All the patterns are of the same depth. The degree of compaction of the sand is made homogeneous throughout the base. As shown, the innermost pattern 4 is in position. Each pattern may be of sheet steel and comprises a removable wedge shaped insert (3), Figs. 1a and 1b (not shown), bolted to the remainder of the pattern. The pattern for defining the outermost annulus has a recess (2) to receive the seat 14 of a teeming nozzle. Loose sand can be spread over the tamped sand to prevent peeling of the bottom during drying.
