Abstract
1407469 Mould for an electroslag refining process BRITISH STEEL CORP 9 Nov 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52046/72 Heading B3F A mould for use in an electroslag refining process comprises a plurality of superimposed open-ended mould members 5 each of which includes at least two parts 5a and 5b movable horizontally between spaced apart positions in they form parts of side walls of an upper reservoir section 2 of the mould and adjacent positions in which their inner surfaces co-operate to define the cavity 4 of an ingot-shaping section 3 of the mould. The reservoir section 2 and the mould cavity 4 may also be partly defined by stationary side members 6. In the embodiment shown the mould is supported by hydraulic jacks 12 and may be used to form an ingot 11 of greater height than itself. As the ingot builds up mould members 5 are removed from the bottom of the mould and placed in their spaced apart positions on top of the reservoir section 2, and the parts of the mould members defining the lowermost portion of the reservoir section are moved inwardly to the positions in which they define the cavity 4. The jacks 12 are raised as the members 5 are removed from the bottom of the mould. The parts of each mould member 5 may be connected to a water main (16) via flexible hoses (15) and a rotatable manifold (17) Fig. 4 (not shown) and the mould may be constructed so that a plurality of ingots can be produced simultaneously, Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown). Moulds for producing ingots which vary in cross-section along their length, e.g. ingots in the form of a roll having a plurality of passes, or a crankshaft, are also described, Figs. 10 to 12 (not shown). In these embodiments there is no removal of mould members from the bottom of the mould but as the ingot builds up the height of the reservoir section is decreased and that of the ingot-shaping section increased by moving the mould members 5 from their spaced apart positions to their adjacent positions.
