Abstract

1386154 Continuous casting INSTITUTE PO METALOZNANIE I TECHNOLOGIA NA METALITE 29 March 1972 [7 April 1971] 14881/72 Heading B3F A metal-gas alloy is formed and continuously cast as a rod, tube, wire or strip, by subjecting molten metal in a heated crucible 3 to the gas (to be dissolved in it) in admixture with a second gas which does not interact or dissolve in the metal, and then casting the alloy in a mould 18 whilst subject to an atmosphere in which there is a pressure of the first gas higher than the partial pressure of the gas in the mixture, to ensure that the dissolved gas remains in solution in the solidifying alloy. The gas mixture is passed from a reservoir 7 by way of a regulating valve 5 through a pipe 4 to saturate the metal which is covered by a flux layer in crucible 3 in a chamber 1. By opening a valve 9 briefly, the pressure beneath a cover 6 is raised to discharge metal through a conduit 12<SP>1</SP> into the mould 18 above which is maintained a pressure of the first (alloying) gas by way of a conduit 17<SP>1</SP> from a reservoir 14. Alternatively, the metal rises through a conduit 12, opening a non-return valve 11, to pass into a chamber 10 beneath a flux layer and beneath an alloying- gas layer supplied from the reservoir 14. Gas valves 16, 17 control the metal flow rate to the mould 18 from which the casting 19 is forced by gas pressure through a gas seal 22 at a rate controlled by a device 20. Devices, not shown, regulate the metal levels, temperatures and gas pressures as well as the alloy composition. A valve 21 on the container valve 6 releases gas pressure after discharge of a portion of metal from the chamber 1.
