Abstract
To produce a casting containing dissolved or chemically bound gas, molten metal 1 is saturated with gas from a reservoir 6 through a pipe 8 and fed under pressure into a closed mould 11 which contains the same gas under pressure so that the mould gas is raised to a pressure above the saturating pressure to prevent gas separating out of the metal. The shot of melt is raised into a cylinder 14 by feeding more gas into the melt 1 to increase the gas pressure in a chamber 3 (containing the melt receptacle surrounded by a heater and is forced by a piston 15 into the mould 11 against the pressure created by gas supplied through a cock 9 to a chamber 10 containing the mould 11. The gas in the mould is forced into a top member 12 and this is opened after solidification and after the gas from the chamber 10 has been passed through a circulation-regeneration system 16 whence it may be returned to the reservoir 6. The action of the member 12 may be replaced by a compression cylinder 19 by which the mould gas pressure may be controlled, e.g. increased.
