138,475. Brennan, R., and O'Connor, J. March 21, 1919. Compulsory differential driving.-In a vehicle having non-deflectable coupled wheels and steered by differential driving, the driving-gear comprises pairs of gear-wheels arranged side by side and connected respectively with the driving- members and the road wheels, the gearwheels being in mesh with planetpinions carried in casings which can be independently rotated. The driving-axle 15, Fig. 3, carries gears 17 keyed thereto and loose gears 18 attached by bosses 19 to the road wheels 11<a>. Planet-pinions 19<a> mesh with the gears 17, 18 and are carried in casings 20 provided with wormwheels 21 in mesh with verticallyarranged worms 22. The worm shafts 23 are fitted with bevel-gears 24, 24<a>, Fig. 2, gearing with bevels on a transverse shaft 26, which, by means of clutches 26<a>, 26<b> and bevel-gearing. 27 - - 31, can be rotated in either direction. The clutches 26<a>, 26<b> are controlled by hand-levers at either end of the vehicle. The axle 15 is driven, as shown, by crank or bevel or other gearing, and the road wheels are coupled by connecting-rods 14. Change-speed mechanism may be employed. for driving the shaft 26 to effect a wide variation of speed.
