Abstract

1382828 Spray nozzles PLESSEY CO Ltd 20 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 8548/71 Heading B2F [Also in Divisions Fl and F4] A jet 6 of liquid, e.g. fuel, from a nozzle 2 subject to longitudinal vibrations, e.g. ultrasonic vibrations, impinges on a stationary impact surface 8 spaced from the nozzle, e.g. by 6 mm. The surface 8 may be perpendicular to the jet axis, inclined to the jet axis, Fig. 2 (not shown), or formed as a wedge providing two sprays 9. The surface 8 may define an aperture opening to a collector tube 7 through which fuel is returned to a fuel source when ceramic piezo-electric element 4 is not evergized. The nozzle 2 has a sharp-edged orifice 3 and the surface 8 may direct the spray through an aperture into a chamber. The nozzle may be employed in the combustion chamber fuel systems of gas turbine engines or the air intakes of I.C. engines.
