Abstract

1,093,914. Deflecting propulsive jets. ERNST HEINKEL A.G. Aug. 2, 1965 [Aug. 8, 1964], No. 32928/65. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] An aircraft jet propulsion engine having an after-burner with mechanically controlled jet deflecting apparatus has the deflecting surface cooled, when in the deflecting position, by water injected into the after-burner chamber. The engine 1 has a rigidly attached after-burner 2 with a bevelled end wall 3 which co-operates with a cowl member 5 mounted on a fixed pivot 4 and formed with a propulsion nozzle 14. The cowl may be swung forwardly about pivot 4 to partially enclose after-burner 2 whereby nozzle 14 is aligned with engine 1 for forward propulsion of the aircraft in which the engine is installed. When in the deflected position shown the hot gases impinge on surface 8 and deposit an amount of unburnt fuel. To cool the deflecting member and also to cause burning of the unburnt fuel, water is discharged into the after-burner and the deflecting member through fixed nozzles 7. Another arrangement is described in which the deflecting member comprises a plurality of pivoted sections. There is a prior art reference to injection of cooling air into the jet deflecting apparatus.
