Abstract

1379547 Carbon fibres COURTAULDS Ltd 30 March 1972 [9 Feb 1971] 4221/71 Heading C1A The tensile strength of carbon filaments is increased by exposing the filaments to treatment by a gaseous halogen in the presence of water vapour. The preferred halogens are chlorine and bromine. Preferably the treatment is carried out at elevated temperatures. The halogen treatment may be followed by heat treatment in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen. The carbon filaments thus treated may be embedded in a resin matrix, e.g. an epoxy resin or a polyester resin.
