Abstract

137,520. Ordnance Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Bergman, A. G.). Jan. 6, 1919, [Convention date]. Projectiles.-Consists of a long-distance timefuse shell in which are packed in rear of the time fuse and nose-plug C an illuminating body D, reinforced by a soft metal coil S, and two or more connected parachutes. The illuminant and the parachutes are adapted to be expelled rearwardly from the shell by an expelling charge F, ignited by the time fuse, and the parachutes, which are of graduated sizes, open up from the smallest one in order, so that the iluminating body D is retarded before the largest sustaining parachute O<3> opens, the final disposition being as shown in Fig. 6. The body D is enclosed in a thin jacket E connected by a ball-bearing swivel P to the suspending cord O<4>. The expelling charge F may be contained in a bag, and is enclosed by a fibre ring G. A barrier comprising a perforated metal plate H, a fibre ring I and disk J, and a metal disk is placed between the expelling charge and the illuminating body, the space i permitting expansion of the gases before they ignite the illuminating composition. Separable distance-pieces c, N in the form of half cylinders relieve the illuminating body and the parachutes of pressure during ejection. The base plug R is secured by shearing pins r<2>, and is held against rotation relatively to the walls of the shell A by longitudinal keys r<3> of hard metal. Specification 125,072 is referred to, as to an illuminating shell embodying a speed retarding and a sustaining parachute.
