Abstract

1374113 Compacting granules VON ROLL AG 22 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970 9 Nov 1970] 49319/71 Heading B5A Granular material is compacted, e.g. into a block anode in a tubular casing 5 by end walls 12, 13 each connected by a servo system to a programming means 60 (Fig. 2, not shown) which selectively applies to the material a steady compaction pressure alone or with superimposed varying vibrations. The walls 12, 13 are attached to hydraulic or pneumatic rams 17, 18 which are attached to sealed end caps 7, 8 of the tubular casing, the lower ram 22 by way of an ejector ram 30. The pressure exerted by rams 17, 18 is controlled by valves 80, 81 which are electrically operated in response to amplified signals from a signal generator. The programming means (60) modifies the amplitude, frequency and wave shape of the signal to produce non- cyclically recurring impact pulses. The walls 12, 13 may be driven independently or in opposite directions in synchronism. Transducers 97-100 supply pressure or position signals for controlling the rams 17, 18 which may be replaced by electromagnetic actuators. The space around the rams is evacuated by suction apparatus 50 through lines 48, 49. The casing 5 is supported on a frame 4 resting on springs 3 and end cap 7 is removable by a ram 36 acting through lever 38.
