Abstract
1369043 Continuous casting MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 6 Oct 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 46561/71 Heading B3F Molten metal is poured, e.g. by way of a tundish outlet 6a and protected by a tube 7, through a bath 8 of molten slag heated by non-consumable electrodes 3 in the upper part of a mould 1 in which a casting 12 is formed to be withdrawn downwards. As shown, the casting 12 is hollow because there is a mandrel 2 in the mould. The mould may be shaped to produce channel- or I- sections and there may be several nozzles 6a feeding it, or the tundish 6 may be rotated or oscillated back and forth about its axis. Current from the electrodes 3, each in an air- or watercooled holder 4, maintains the slag bath 8 of 30-80 mm. depth at 1500-2000 C. To lubricate and protect the casting 12 and retard its cooling, films 10 of slag 0À2-2À0 mm. thick form on the solidifying metal 11 in the mould 1. Jets of water from bodies 13 provide secondary cooling and the slag films 10 are removed in this region. Alternatively, cooling air or water may be injected into the gaps between the slagcovered casting and the mould and mandrel. Part at least of the mould surface may be provided by a graphite liner (15).
