Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a casting which is not stained by a melting vessel by forming the tap hole of the vessel to a specific shape and size at the time of melting high melting point metals, alloys, compds., etc., by electron beam irradiation in the vessel and casting the melt from the tap hole of the vessel into a casting mold. CONSTITUTION:The metals such as W, Ta, Nb, and V, having the high m.p. of >=1,900 deg.C as well as the alloys thereof and the silicides, borides, carbides, etc., thereof are put into the water-cooled copper vessel in an electron beam melting device and are melted by the electron beam irradiation from an electron gun. The melt is cast into the casting mold provided below the vessel by which a cast ingot is produced. The tap hole of the water cooled copper vessel is formed to >=2cm width A and >=2cm depth H in this case. The melting in the shoulder part of the side wall of the tap hole of the vessel by the deviation of the electron beam and the consequent staining of the molten high melting point metal in the vessel are then obviated and the high-purity high melting point molten metal is cast in the casting mold.
