Abstract

1,048,920. Continuous casting machines. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. June 4, 1964 [June 7, 1963], No. 23290/64. Heading B3F. A method of continuous casting comprises maintaining a body of molten metal adjacent a chilled mould, feeding melt to the mould under a relatively small pressure and effecting solidification in two stages by extracting heat from the molten metal by a metal confining surface around the mould periphery immediately preceding the zone established by the chilled mould and extracting additional heat as the metal moves into the chilled mould. Metal is fed to a reservoir formed by refractory plates 6 at the head of the mould 18, through a pipe 12 with radial outlets 16. Clamped between the plates 6 and the head face of the mould is a heat conductive member 22, e.g. of graphite which initiates freezing of the metal. Lubricant is fed to the head of the mould via radial grooves beneath the member 22. A second embodiment for horizontal casting is substantially as described in Specification 1,022,499.
