Abstract

1367020 Electromagnetic forming ALUMINIUM SUISSE SA 6 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 56206/72 Heading B3Q The die-sections in an electromagnetic formng machines are joined together on their inner surfaces which are coated with a layer of flexible material. As shown there are three dies 1, 2 (3) each of four segments 4, 5, 6, 7, the lower segments 6, 7 being mounted pivotally on a support 9 in fixed guides 21 and the upper segments on a support 8 guided by rods in the support 9. Pins 15, 16 connected to the segments 4-6 pass through slots 13, 14 in arcuate plates 11, 12 and are biased by spacings 17 so that when the supports 8, 9 are retracted the segments assume a work-ejecting position, as shown for the lower segments 6, 7. When the supports are brought closer together by pneumatic jacks located between drive rods 25 which are connected to the supports 8, 9 by links 22, 23, the segments are pivoted about their inner edges 36 to the position occupied by segments 4, 5. Coatings of rubber 18, 19 which are continuous over each pair of nylon segments 4, 5 and 6, 7 form flexible joints. The coatings carry an intaglio and/or cameo image, or are stuck closely over and transmit profiles from the dis-surfaces. Each die surrounds a forming coil 10 for shaping cans. More than two die-sections may be joined by a single continuous flexible layer, e.g. a single layer may extend around all four die-sections 4-6, from face 32 to face 34, a serially vertical curved mounting plate then being used which is operated by arms similar to the links 22, 23.
