Abstract

1363111 Metallurgical ladles USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 25 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 17024/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division B3] Casting apparatus comprises a bottom-pour vessel 10, having a nozzle 15 controlled by a sliding gate 16, a mould 12, and a shroud 18, 23, with an inlet (22) for inert gas, for protecting the metal stream, there being a shroud portion 18 at the top of the mould having means (a sleeve) 19 providing a telescopic seal with a portion 23 supported by a mounting, e.g. 24, 26, on the vessel 10. A series of slidable gates 16 is supported by spring-loaded rocker arms (17) on the vessel 10. The shroud portion 23 is supported by hangers 24 and a plate 26 and adjusted by shims 30. A spring-loaded portion (31) of the top edge of portion 23 is hinged to allow movement of the gate when it bears adherent solidified metal. As shown, there is a gap 40 as a gas outlet. In a modification, rocker arms 17, Fig. 9, hold the shroud portion 23 against the gate so that there is no outlet gap. The nozzle can be changed without disturbing the shroud. The shroud portion 18 may comprise two parts bolted along a vertical centre-plane, one part being removable to allow an oxygen lance to be introduced.
