Abstract

1298346 Continuous casting; casting processes USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 10 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 60359/69 Heading B3F A stream S of molten metal from a nozzle 13 (of a tundish or ladle 10 which may have a closure for controlling discharge) forms a pool P in a continuous casting or ingot mould 12 having passed through an enclosure which is formed by the mould and a box 15 and receives a protective gas such as Ar or a reducing gas which escapes through the inlet 17 for the stream S to envelop the latter and form an eddy current zone 24 around it. The protective gas, which may absorb dissolved gases from the metal (although the latter may have been vacuum-degassed), enters through a tube 20 in a plate 14 which may be fixed to the mould top and includes a sampling tube 21. The box 15 resting on the plate 14 is formed in two halves 15a, 15b, separable to provide access to the nozzle, and one half has an observation window 19. Relative dimensions and a gas flow rate are given.
